BIOSKETCH:

Floyd Balch Haworth was born on January 9, 1893 in Galva, Iowa, and received his doctorate degree from the University of Iowa in 1932. He then served the federal government for one year, working with the National Resources Commission from 1934 to 1935. In addition, he returned to work in Washington during World War II, this time for the Board of Investigation and Research of Transportation.

In 1938, Dr. Haworth joined the faculty of the University of Illinois, specializing in the fields of statistics and finance. Many of the materials he created for his statistics classes were published and were widely used throughout academia. During his time at the University, he also served on many committees in the College of Commerce, including the elected executive committee of the Department of Economics.

Colleagues and students alike said that Dr. Haworth’s most notable ability was his teaching skills. He took a great interest in many of his students, and had a keen ability to push successful students outside their academic comfort zone. He also spent a great deal of time and energy helping less successful students overcoming their obstacles in his classes.

Dr. Haworth retired from the University in 1960, and moved to Fresno, California, where he began teaching courses in economics at Fresno State College. Just over a year after arriving in California, Dr. Haworth died on January 27, 1962 at the age of 69.
