Russell Marion Nolen received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri in 1924 and his master’s degree from the same institution in 1926. During his college years, Nolen regularly attended summer sessions at the University of Chicago to further his study of political science.

Professor Nolen became a professor of history at the Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale in 1929. After two years of teaching history, he organized the Economics Department at that school and became the department’s first head. During the years he served as department head, Nolen had by far the heaviest teaching load in the college.

While department head, Professor Nolen received his PhD from Washington University in 1936. The next year, Dr. Nolen was appointed a Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois, which offered him more resources and flexibility to perform research in his preferred field of money and banking. In 1945, he was promoted from Associate to Assistant Professor of Economics.

Dr. Nolen was known as a prolific speaker during his career. He addressed numerous civic organizations and made commencement speeches regularly during his time at SINU and Illinois. While he lived in Urbana, he served as the president of the Urbana Citizens Building Association and as president of the Urbana Rotary Club. He was also a member of the American Economic Association and American Finance Association.

In 1958, Dr. Nolen would leave the University of Illinois and move to Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. He taught at Stetson for seven years before retiring. Dr. Nolen was deceased on December 17, 1986, at the age of 85.
