Biosketch:

Gordon Samuel Watkins came to the University of Illinois in 1914 as a graduate student, taking his M.A. in 1915 and teaching coursework in economics and sociology over the following ten years. In 1917 he was awarded his Ph.d. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Early in his career, Professor Watkins would be recognized as a leading authority on labor problems, writing one of the most widely circulated textbooks on the subject, “The Economics of Industrial Relations,” a major work through six editions and numerous translations. Equally outstanding as an editor, Professor Watkins served on the editorial board of the American Economic Review from 1923 to 1926.

Few instructors at the University of Illinois enjoyed a larger personal following than Professor Watkins. His ideals and ability as a teacher made him one of the most popular on campus.

In 1925, he accepted a professorship of economics and industrial relations at UCLA, where he would serve the remainder of his distinguished career. Gordon S. Watkins would be named Dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at UCLA in 1936.
