Biosketch:
Ivan Wright came to the University of Illinois in 1920 as an Instructor for the Department of Economics, after completing his Ph.D. at Cornell. He would progress through the academic ranks to full professor in 1932.
Recognized as an outstanding authority on banking and finance matters, Professor Wright served in such capacities as advisor to the Chicago Stock Exchange, consulting money market economist for several New York and Chicago financial houses, and a contributor to many financial publications.
The most proliferative writer on the economics faculty, Professor Wright produced a veritable three-foot shelf of books on money markets, banking, and credit. Best known was the widely-used textbook, “Readings in Money, Credit and Banking Principles.” Notable also was his “Bank Credit and Agriculture,” the only work of its kind in 1922.
In 1940, Professor Wright was named the Executive Director of the New York Stock Exchange. It was this year that he would end his 20-year tenure at Illinois, accepting an appointment as professor of economics at Brooklyn College.
